Workcamp 2024

Words from our Residents

What has this week meant to you?

There is a song by Christian artist Anne Wilson that says, “Is your burden weighin’ heavy? Is it all too much to carry? Let me tell you about my Jesus…” Five years ago, I entered a season I never could have imagined. My husband, Michael, and I both had COVID. Michael passed away, and although I survived, I continue to struggle with severe long COVID symptoms that have impacted my health, strength, and mobility. As my home began to crumble around me with constant unexpected challenges, God continually reminded me that He was with me in the fire. Through His Word, His presence, and His people, He kept the flame of hope alive in my heart and showed me His faithfulness again and again.

One of the greatest gifts God gave me came through the Work Camp Mission project. The students and leaders didn’t just bring tools and supplies — they brought servant hearts filled with compassion, courage, and joy. They worked tirelessly without judgment, overcoming fears and discomforts to serve a stranger with love and kindness. Even when rain canceled their plans to explore Detroit and Lake St. Clair, they chose joy instead of complaint, dancing in the rain and filling my home and heart with hope. Their faith, teamwork, and genuine care reminded me that God is still working powerfully through young people today. I’m also deeply grateful for the staff and volunteers of First English Church whose hard work and faith made this mission possible. Through all of them, God painted a lasting rainbow of hope across my life.

It has made my home a home again. The "crew" was a great asset to making it so. Their politeness, kindness, and inspiration make me grateful for what I have.

Clare Carlisle, Detroit
I had to humble myself and make sure that the group that fixed on our home was comfortable in doing their work around them, which made things go smooth as needed. Praying in the session was peaceful and very well spoken.

Marie Collins, Detroit
This help has been so appreciated. They have done work I never could have physically done. Never could have afforded to pay to have it done. The kids were a pure delight to have around and I actually will miss them.

Mary Anne Pokorny, Eastpointe
Because of your hard work and dedication to this project, I am now able to leave my home safely. The repairs and paint to the living room allows me and my family to enjoy this beautiful space again.

Janet McConky, Grosse Pointe Park
This week was a faith elevation for me. I got to meet some awesome people whose focus was to help me and show me the love of God through servitude. Me and my children are grateful and encouraged. We see and feel the unconditional love. Thank you all.

I am overwhelmed by the wheelchair ramp that the camp crew number 24 has provided. My mobility and access to the outdoors is vastly improved. I am so thankful!

This week has meant a lot, but it is overwhelming. This will reduce the pain my sister has when pushing our mother up and down the old ramp.

There were people out there willing to help the seniors with repairs and painting to their homes. Enjoyed the young people and crew leader in all they did, making my home look like it was brand new, 100% better. Thank you! May God bless you all and have a happy and safe trip back home.

Wow, I've enjoyed the company, the work done, and the spirit. They worked hard and didn't talk too much. The co-sponsors were amazing. They were here often and very helpful.

I can't believe it. Gifts from God. I've been on my knees every night just thanking God. I'm so grateful for the work these guys have done for me. It will make such a difference in my life. Such a blessing!

This has been beyond what could be said in words. Forever grateful for the workers and what they accomplished in the short time. Rain came and interrupted, but their spirits and attitudes will be something forever engraved in my heart. Thank you for everything!

This week has meant not doing life alone. Seeing the hands and feet of Jesus operating in my life to help me and my two kiddos. It has made my home more livable and enjoyable. It's shown me it's okay to ask for and receive help, even if it's uncomfortable. I am so blessed by you all. I will always remember this.

Jessica Little, Detroit
Unbelievable! I am deeply, deeply grateful to the Workcamp group and my amazing "volunteers"! This work has taken a load off my mind, but it also gave me an incentive to get myself together, be more active, and to keep things up. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
