Program:
At First English Lutheran Preschool, children are unique individuals who learn through play in a safe, nurturing and inclusive environment. Our teachers are knowledgeable in the field of child development, provide appropriate developmental experiences and opportunities for each child through careful planning and observations. First English Lutheran Preschool’s play-based philosophy enriches the whole child, including social, emotional, physical, cognitive, creative, and spiritual development. All families are welcome at FELP.
We utilize the HighScope Curriculum. Play-based, child-centered, and grounded in research, the HighScope Curriculum features active learning at its core. In a HighScope classroom, children are guided to explore, interact, and exercise their creative imagination through purposeful play. Well-prepared teachers support and extend each child’s learning based on their developmental levels, so children enter school ready and eager to learn.

Special Events: Special events are varied. They may include special guests, Curriculum Night, Christmas Pageant, Easter Egg Hunt, end of year picnic, visit from Lou's Pet Shop, or planned family field trips/park playdates. Parents are always welcome when their schedule allows them to visit the classroom and participate.
Certification: FELP is licensed with the State of Michigan. Please call the church office (313-884-5040) to arrange a visit.
How much does it cost and how do I pay?
Each visit is $10 (per child, infants under 12 mo are free). Families can do a trial visit for free (please email us at preschool@feelc.org if you would like to do this.) Payments can be made by cash/check in person when you come or can be paid in advance online. The link is available above. If you choose this option, please select “preschool” as the fund and double check frequency is set to “one-time”.
What should I bring?
Play can be messy! Paint and other art/sensory materials will be available and while they are washable and smocks are available - play clothing is recommended. Families are welcome to bring a water bottle or snack (we will also provide a snack and have a water station for the children). Provided snacks are allergy friendly, our classroom is nut-free.
What happens if I sign up or pay in advance but can't make it?
If you are able, remove your name from our Signup Genius link. Pre-payments can be used for a future session or processed as a refund.
Who is invited?
Children under 5 and a caregiver. This program is recommended for walking toddlers and older. Siblings are welcome. Children under 12 months are free. Caregivers stay for the duration of your visit.
What does a session look like?
Our playgroup is intentionally designed to be an unstructured open playtime. Children are invited to socialize, play and explore the different areas of our spacious preschool classroom. We will have sensory and art experiences available as well as a light snack. (Families can bring their own). Playgroup is hosted by one of our preschool teachers.
When is playgroup?
Fridays from 9a-12p our classroom will be open for play. Families can come and go at times that work for them.
Where is it?
Our classroom is located on Level 1 of First English Evangelical Lutheran Church - 800 Vernier, GPW. We are located at the corner of Wedgewood and Vernier, across from North HS.
Where should I park?
The easiest place to park is the far East side of the building. From there you will follow the front of the building until you see a fenced-in courtyard. Our classroom is located through this courtyard down a short flight of steps. If you need access to an elevator, please email us for accommodation.
Do I need to register in advance?
We have a Signup Genius link available (see above) to help ensure capacity each session. Families can sign up any time before they arrive assuming there is space. Families should sign up for a spot for each child.
Is there an illness policy?
We ask that if you or your child are not feeling well to stay home. We understand some children may be otherwise healthy but have a mild runny nose or slight cough, especially in the winter months. Our criteria for our preschool program is to exclude children who are experiencing a fever over 100 degrees, vomiting, diarrhea, unexplained rash, or general lethargy. Note above regarding refunds or using payment toward a future visit. As it is developmentally appropriate for young children to mouth toys, we have a “yuck bucket” available and regularly sanitize our toys and classroom.
Is there a bathroom/changing table?
We have 2 child-size bathrooms in our classroom. Additionally, down the hall there are adult bathrooms with a changing table.
